Position Summary:

Reporting to the Supervisor or designate the position of Equipment Operator III – haul truck (745/773) will assist in the completion of civil related functions including the installation, preparation and maintaining areas on the project site some of which are sensitive to the environment. The duties will be performed recognizing the schedule of the project and utilizing a best practices approach as directed by the Supervisor.

Job Responsibilities:

Primary Functions:

  • Operating heavy equipment in a safe and productive manner, including:
    • Recognizing potential machine hazards (e.g., blind spots, crush hazard)
    • Recognizing potential site hazards (e.g., equipment traffic, pedestrian traffic, slope instability)
    • Recognizing potential environmental hazards (e.g., fuel/oils spills or leaks)
    • Demonstrating the ability to steer/brake the haul truck truck
    • Maintaining the proper clearance on haul roads
    • Using proper radio protocols and location reporting
    • Following all traffic management plans i.e. signage
    • Before moving the haul truck. (i.e. combination of shoulder checks, visual, and using the mirrors)
    • Choosing the appropriate speed for the surroundings/conditions
    • Proper raising/lowering the dump box smoothly. (i.e. dumping on solid level ground, not jerky motion)
  • Correctly assessing load stability and vehicle stability on haul roads
  • Demonstrating ability safely transport gravel materials such as rock or crush
  • Demonstrating ability to control all functions of the haul truck
  • Demonstrates ability to operate, maneuver and park the haul truck in safe and controlled manner, including driving in reverse
  • Demonstrates ability to follow all hand signals and directions for operation of vehicle
  • Capable of withstanding jarring from constant movement on rough terrain and frequent bouncing from receiving loads of waste rock or other material from other equipment
  • Performing all duties within the capacities and limitations of the equipment assigned
  • Complete/maintain daily pre-trip checklists and outline to the supervisor any concerns regarding the safe operation of the equipment assigned, including inspection of equipment
  • Demonstrates the correct start-up procedure including brake and steering checks
  • Performing routine checks on equipment to ensure it is safe and in good working order, including, good housekeeping practices i.e. Ensures windows and mirrors are clean, and mirrors are adjusted correctly and proper track cleaning
  • Have a good idea of your surroundings on where equipment and personal is located in your working zone
  • Always observe the following safety practices;
    • Never use cell phone or personal electronic devices on equipment
    • When out of the haul truck safety gear must be worn at all times
    • Uses three-point contact for mounting and dismounting machine
  • Must be a strong communicator in dealing with internal team members
  • Other duties as assigned

Working Conditions:

  • Must be physically fit and able to work in remote camp locations
  • Outdoor work subject to extreme weather changes
  • Must be able to work access/board equipment in areas with uneven ground or snow or soft-ground/surface water

Qualifications

Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum of 3 years previous operating experience on haul trucks (745/773) is required
  • Must possess decision making and problem solving skills by analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems
  • Coordinating the Work and Activities of Others — getting members of a group to work together to accomplish tasks
  • Establishing and Maintaining Interpersonal Relationships — developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintaining them over time

Please Note: This is a site-based position located at the Site C Dam in Fort St. John, British Columbia. Preference will be given to qualified, local candidates. However, we will also consider fly in/out candidates based out of Vancouver, Nanaimo, Kelowna, Calgary, or Edmonton. Rotational employees are required to work a 14/7 rotation; flights and camp accommodations are provided while on shift.
